Canon EOS-1D Mark III, 10 MP, 10 fps: Digital Photography Review
Canon are planning to release a completely new version of their flagship EOS-1D, not just an upgrade to the older Mark II model.
The latest offering has a 10.1 megapixel sensor with dimensions of 28.1 x 18.7 mm so it is still not going to offer the same focal length as the old film cameras but with the proliferation of wide angle lenses designed for the digital age this shouldn’t really be a problem.
My only reservation is that the difference in dimensions means your lens is slightly slower than it would be with a full frame sensor. There is no mention of how much difference there is with this new sensor size but I would imagine it will be an improvement over the older and smaller sensors.
One of the highlights of the new EOS is blazing speed with 10 frames per second being available for up to 30 shots when recording raw images and an amazing 110 frames for large JPEG images. This is the equivalent of shooting three rolls of film in eleven seconds! This sort of performance is thanks to the inclusion of not one but two DIGIC III processors. At last there is a reason for 8GB memory cards.
A whole raft of other features are included such as a new autofocus system with 19 cross type sensors and a bigger three inch LCD panel on the back with “Live View” mode as well as a wider, brighter viewfinder. Of course it also has the EOS integrated cleaning system to stop dust from settling on your sensor during lens changes and ruining your shots.
The only stumbling block is the price which is to be barely under four grand. I wonder if I can convince the wife that I really need it for work?
