Fur flies over Miss Universe

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and some of the other raving loony animal rights types are campaigning to get the reigning Miss Universe, Japan’s Riyo Mori, to stop wearing animal furs by accusing her of promoting cruelty.

Ms Mori, 20, a ballerina by training, wore a full-length fur coat at the pageant in Mexico City where she was crowned this year, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said.

Supporters are being encouraged to email Ms Mori after her office refused to respond to inquiries, the US-based rights group said.

“As Miss Universe, you are expected to be a positive role model who sets a good example,” PETA said in a letter to Ms Mori.

“Prove that your beauty is more than skin deep.”

“By choosing to wear fur, not only are you directly responsible for the deaths of dozens of animals, you’re also sending a clear message to everyone who sees you that animals’ lives are less important than fashion,” it said.

PETA also offered Ms Mori weblinks to gruesome footage from dog and cat fur farms in China.

I haven’t seen any pictures but I would strongly doubt that Ms. Mori would be wearing dog or cat fur. In any case even if she were it is her own choice. Other than those who are strict vegans in the ranks of the protesters I would surmise that the one’s who eat meat or even eggs would be horrified to see footage of a slaughter house or battery farm. All of the protestors use electricity which would be generated by strip mining coal, drilling for oil or nuclear power (which still entails mining for uranium) and all of those activities could cause the death of animals through some means.

PETA is famous for its publicity stunts in campaigning for animal rights and has frequently targeted celebrities and companies that promote fur, most visibly the British fashion giant Burberry.

If they don’t want people wearing fur they should suggest a viable alternative. Cotton has long been known for environmental problems caused by large scale farming. Wool entails rather unethical treatment of sheep and at the end of its productive life the final solution involves mutton. Synthetics involve mining and drilling with consequent damage to the environment which would somewhat perturb some of the local wildlife. Silk involves the mass slaughter of silkworms in the pupa stage.

Of course I am all for holding Miss Universe competitions with all of the contestants running around naked but then we would have all of the religious nuts coming out of the woodwork and protesting. In Nigeria over 200 people were killed because the Muslims were upset that the Nigerian contestant posed in a swim suit. What would they do if she was naked?

Why can’t these people just shut up and leave the rest of the world alone. If you want to believe something well and good, just don’t try to force it on others.

No trees were chopped down in the writing of this post, several billions of electrons were, however, seriously inconvenienced. Perhaps we should form a group for the ethical treatment of electrons?
