Nokia E90
Nokia just may tempt me back into the fold with their new E90 smart phone which was shown at the 3GSM trade show. It will replace its older 9300 “brick” model. This latest offering has more svelte dimensions than the older phones it replaces at 132 x 57 x 20 mm. The phone runs on the latest Symbian OS version 9.1 with a 330MHz ARM processor.
Connectivity is pretty much complete and starts with quad band GSM (so you should be able to use it almost anywhere) and includes WAP, EDGE, and HSPDA at 3.6 Mbps. Additionally it will connect to computers using USB2, IRDA, WIFI or Bluetooth 2.0, the latest version which is just starting to show up on mobile phones.
The external screen is a generous QVGA while the internal sport a resolution of 800 x 352 pixels, both with 16M colors. Other features are 128MB of internal memory and external memory in the microSD flavor, which can be hotswapped.
It just may be time for me to give up my old Sony Ericsson P910i which I have had for a couple of years now. I was planning to replace it with the P990 but I was disappointed with the features that it had, particularly the screen.
It’s pretty much a toss-up now between this new Nokia and the HTC TyTN which runs Windows 5.0 mobile. I have tried the TyTN (actually the Dopod 838, the same thing with different logos) and I was impressed with the call quality. The only thing that I didn’t like was the lack of a numeric keypad on the front. Keyboards score about the same with the TyTN sporting a slide out keyboard similar in size to the Nokia.
It will be interesting to compare the two phones side by side when the Nokia is finally released. Of course by then there may be some newer offerings from HTC to take advantage of the latest Windows 6.0 release.
