Personnel department computer system

While on a crew run by one of the biggest name seismic outfits recently I was surprised to hear that one of the staff had been bid for multiple jobs at the same time. Bidding in this manner is not unusual but what is highly unusual is that the people involved in the different bids were not even aware that they in competition for this person!

The company involved has countless computerized systems in place ranging from their requisition systems, a HSE system including Drive-Right and VDO systems, their standard crew production reporting system, inventory systems for the various departments and so on and so forth and all of the systems are known by their acronyms. They are currently putting a system in place that will track their vehicles using GPS so that anybody in the company can log in to the system and know where any company vehicle in the world is.

It would seem that the only thing that is not kept track of are the personnel. After many years in the industry I know that bidding on new jobs can be a hectic process. I also know that there is a personnel department and that they should have some idea of where somebody is going next and in the case a person being on two crew lists somebody should know about the problem before the person in question is called by the respective crew supervisors and asked when he is coming.

Lately with industry booming it can be hard to hire enough people but this would seem to be a case of a company not having enough personnel and treating their current personnel as though they don’t really need them.
